1. Onions: A favorite cool-season vegetable that can be enjoyed cooked or raw. Onions are easy to grow, especially if you grow them from sets.

2. Radishes: A favorite for kids as they grow so quickly. There are so many varieties and colors like purple, pink, red and white.

3. Lettuces: Another fast grower, lettuces are so good for you. The darker the color, the healthier they are.

4. Spinach: Ok, we all know it has lots of iron but even more Vitamin A and C.

5. Cress: Delicious on sandwiches and salads, this peppery herb can be ready for harvest in as few as two weeks!

6. Carrots: Carrot seeds are so tiny. It is easier to broadcast them and thin them when they are about two inches tall.

7. Peas: This year I am growing Dwarf Grey Sugars because you can eat the pod and all. There a so many delicious peas to choose from. A great vegetable for the small garden because you can grow them on a trellis.

8. Oregano: This beauty comes in several varieties with the Greek being the most pungent. Great for cooking and also has medicinal uses.

9. Chives: Chives are great because once you plant them from seed you never have to do it again. They grow profusely and can be divided and moved to other parts of the garden as needed…plus, they’re so delicious on eggs, potatoes, in rice and soups.

10. Tarragon: There is nothing quite like the sweet smell and taste of tarragon. It is one of my favorite herbs. It is great in sauces and stews and can be delightful in less expected dishes like lemon pound cake!

Michelet Turkovich Carsrud provided this essay from her soon to be daughter in law. She has had considerable adversity to tend with in her life and this is her first college essay. We are happy to share it with you.

Harvesting Children

If you were to think of farming and parenting you might not think they have anything in common. There are many steps taken in both to ensure a positive outcome. Where one would be of value, (crops) it is still a necessity , and the other much more significant, a human life. Both being essential in their own ways most wouldn’t assume these topics could be compared.
Anyone can become a parent, some plan on it to happen after marriage. Sometimes life surprises you, and then you’re forced to adapt. Once the baby has been conceived your life drastically changes for the next nine months, and won’t return to how it was before. Money management is a big issue with having children. For the next eighteen years or more you will have to provide food, shelter, clothing, education, and most of all love for your child.
Planting a seed in the ground and watering it every day isn’t considered farming. Farming is complex, you have to prepare the soil for starters. Unhealthy soil could cause soil-based diseases. Gully repair and terracing(leveling a section of a hill to prevent rapid erosion) help keep the soil pure. Another way to help the upkeep of soil is by using organic matter. Compost and manure are both very common. Once the crops have been planted they will need a proper irrigation system to keep them watered properly…. See More
Nurturing a baby is much like nurturing a plant, both require to be taken care of. When a woman is pregnant she must not pollute herself with smoke or alcohol, as it affects the fetus as well. Farmers also have to protect their crops from bugs, animals, or pollution from chemicals. Stress from hard work can cause fetal stress and pre-term labor in pregnant women. A farmers crops experience stress also in the forms of droughts, floods, and high winds. Damaging or destroying the crops all together. When a child is young its main form of protection outside the house is a car seat. Also protecting your child’s skin is very important with sunblock. As they grow the type of administration needed changes, curfews for when they leave home with friends. To protect crops from high winds farmers have windbreaks, barriers made up of shrubs and trees to redirect or stop wind. They also have many varieties of pesticides to keep bugs and animals from eating away at their crops.
When raising a child its a twenty-four hour job, you can’t just let them grow with basic necessities. Farmers do most of the work prior to planting their crops. Once the plants start to grow the farmers just have to upkeep the crop to ensure a good profit. Children can have many influences growing up from media or their friends. Farmers don’t have to worry about their plants going to school or learning to socialize. At some point in your child’s life they will most likely become a parent themselves, so raising them properly can prepare them for their own parenthood. When a farmer harvests his crops he has to start over again next year. It might be a different crop but its still the same process.
Whether your a farmer or a parent your goal is still the same, to raise your crop or child the best you can. Hoping it will grow to be strong and beautiful. Neither is an easy task, but both are very awarding. There are many difficulties but with the proper rules and tools your sure to succeed. Imagine what a farmer with children deals with and how complicated his life would be.
